Model of Lucy
Model of Lucy, a young female Australopithecus afarensis hominid. The model was created from a cast of Lucys bones, and exhibited at the Kenya National Museum, Nairobi, Kenya. The fossil bones are around 3.3 million years old, and are generally thought to represent the earliest known ancestor of humans. The skeleton was found in the Afar region of Ethiopia in 1974. A. afarensis lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago. The structure of the pelvis and legs suggests that it was bipedal. A set of fossilised footprints found in Laetoli, Tanzania, that date from around 3.5 million years ago also provide evidence for bipedalism

EDITORS COMMENTS
This model showcases the intriguing figure of Lucy, a young female Australopithecus afarensis hominid, whose fossilized bones are estimated to be around 3.3 million years old. Discovered in the Afar region of Ethiopia in 1974, Lucy's remains are considered the earliest known ancestor of humans. The structure of her pelvis and legs suggest that she was an upright walker, or bipedal, making her a significant milestone in human evolution. The model, exhibited at the Kenya National Museum in Nairobi, Kenya, was created from a cast of Lucy's bones. Australopithecus afarensis lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago, and this reconstruction provides a glimpse into the appearance of our ancient ancestors. The evidence for Lucy's bipedalism is further supported by a set of fossilized footprints found in Laetoli, Tanzania, which date from around 3.5 million years ago. These footprints provide crucial evidence of early humans' transition from a knuckle-walking, tree-climbing ape to an upright-walking, ground-dwelling species. This model of Lucy is an essential resource for students and researchers in the fields of anthropology, paleontology, and evolutionary biology, offering a tangible connection to our prehistoric past. The study of Lucy and her kind continues to shed light on the fascinating journey of human evolution.
