Model of the Mars Pathfinder rover Sojourner

Sojourner. View of a model of the Mars Pathfinder robotic rover vehicle " Sojourner", moving over a surface that mimics Mars. The true rover vehicle landed on Mars on 4 July 1997. It weighs about 9 kilogrammes, is 63 centimetres (cm) long and 48cm wide. Its wheels and suspension are designed for movement over Mars rocky surface. It is powered by a solar panel (at top) which allows for a few hours of movement per day, and is controlled by an operator on Earth. The Sojourner is equipped with an Alpha Proton X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS). The APXS determines the chemical composition of martian rocks

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a model of the Mars Pathfinder rover Sojourner, as it traverses a surface that closely resembles the rugged terrain of Mars. The actual rover successfully landed on the red planet on July 4,1997, marking a significant milestone in space exploration. Weighing approximately 9 kilograms and measuring 63 centimeters in length and 48 centimeters in width, this compact vehicle was specifically engineered to navigate Mars' rocky landscape. Powered by a solar panel situated at its top, Sojourner can only move for a few hours each day before recharging. Its wheels and suspension system are meticulously designed to withstand the challenging conditions found on Mars. Interestingly, an operator stationed on Earth skillfully controls every movement made by this remarkable robotic explorer. Equipped with an Alpha Proton X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS), Sojourner possesses the ability to analyze martian rocks' chemical composition accurately. This invaluable tool aids scientists in unraveling the mysteries surrounding our neighboring planet's geological makeup. The Science Photo Library has expertly captured this momentous image that encapsulates humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our own world. It serves as a testament to mankind's ingenuity and unwavering curiosity about what lies beyond Earth's boundaries – particularly within the enigmatic realms of Mars exploration.
