Nicholas Kratzer, German astronomer

Nicholas Kratzer (c.1487-1550), German astronomer, mathematician and horologist, surrounded by scientific instruments. Kratzer arrived in England in 1516, later being appointed astronomer and clock-maker to King Henry VIII. This 19th-century engraving is based on a 16th-century painting. The painting was by his friend Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) and dates from 1528 (year at lower left). Holbein visited England from 1526, eventually settling there, and like Kratzer was introduced to the royal court by Sir Thomas More. This engraving, by French artist Francois Jacques Dequevauviller (1783-1848), dates from 1818

This print showcases Nicholas Kratzer, a renowned German astronomer, mathematician, and horologist. In this 19th-century engraving based on a painting by his friend Hans Holbein the Younger from 1528, Kratzer is depicted surrounded by an array of scientific instruments in his workshop. The painting itself was created during Holbein's visit to England, where he eventually settled and introduced Kratzer to the royal court through Sir Thomas More. Kratzer arrived in England in 1516 and went on to become the official astronomer and clock-maker for King Henry VIII. His expertise in both fields earned him great recognition during that era. This engraving, skillfully crafted by French artist Francois Jacques Dequevauviller in 1818, beautifully captures the essence of Kratzer's contributions to science and technology.
