EDITORS COMMENTS
This 16th-century artwork, captured in a woodcut from Cosmographie de Levant (1556), depicts the awe-inspiring power and danger of the Nile crocodile. In this scene, we witness a heart-pounding chase as the massive reptile relentlessly pursues an unfortunate man through the wilds of ancient Egypt. Nile crocodiles are formidable creatures that can grow over six meters long. They inhabit tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Madagascar, favoring swamps, lakes, and rivers as their hunting grounds. Their diet consists of both large prey like antelope and smaller targets such as water birds and small mammals. The French writer and explorer André Thevet meticulously documented his travels through Asia, Greece, Palestine, and Egypt in Cosmographie de Levant. This particular illustration showcases Thevet's encounter with these fearsome predators during his expedition. As we gaze upon this monochromatic masterpiece, our imagination is transported back to a time when humans coexisted with these apex predators. We feel the palpable tension as the hunted Arab desperately flees for his life while being pursued by this relentless aquatic predator. This historical artwork not only offers us a glimpse into the natural world but also serves as a testament to human curiosity about exotic lands during an era of exploration. It reminds us of our place within nature's intricate web – where survival often hinges on quick thinking or finding refuge in hidden places.
