Nostoc C014 / 3089

Nostoc is a type of Blue Green Algae or Cyanobacteria. It consists of long strings of cells suspended in mucilage. To the naked rye it looks like blobs and folded sheets of green jelly, hence the common name Witchs Butter. The cells are prokaryotic and like bacteria have no nucleus, the DNA being found throughout the cytoplasm. The larger cells visible in the strings of vegetative cells are heterocysts which are responsible for nitrogen fixation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Nostoc C014 / 3089, a type of Blue Green Algae or Cyanobacteria. The image reveals long strings of cells suspended in mucilage, resembling blobs and folded sheets of green jelly to the naked eye, thus earning its intriguing common name - Witch's Butter. Nostoc belongs to the prokaryotic world, lacking a nucleus like bacteria. Its DNA is scattered throughout the cytoplasm. Within these strings of vegetative cells, one can observe larger cells known as heterocysts that play a vital role in nitrogen fixation. The colonial cyanobacteria captured in this photograph are not only visually stunning but also biologically significant. They possess an extraordinary ability to convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms usable by other organisms through their process of nitrogen fixation. As we delve deeper into this image, we witness the gelatinous sheath surrounding these colonial algae, adding another layer of complexity and intrigue to their structure. SINCLAIR STAMMERS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY has masterfully immortalized this microscopic wonder through their lens. This print serves as a reminder that nature's intricate designs extend far beyond what meets our eyes on a daily basis. It invites us to appreciate the hidden marvels within our natural world and sparks curiosity about the countless mysteries waiting to be unraveled within microbial lifeforms such as Nostoc C014 / 3089.
