Oil drill operators

Oil drill operators handling drilling machinery. Oil drills are used to drill deep into the ground to reach underground reservoirs of oil. The bore shaft and drilling bit need to be constantly lubricated with drilling fluid to withstand the high temperatures and pressures generated, and to bring the drilled rock to the surface. At regular intervals, extra sections are added to the drill pipe as the drill digs deeper. Each section is usually around 10 metres long. The bore hole itself is less than a metre across, but modern oil wells can be drilled to over 12 kilometres deep. This oil well is in Noyabrsk, in the oil fields of Western Siberia, Russia. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a group of oil drill operators diligently handling drilling machinery in the vast oil fields of Western Siberia, Russia. These skilled individuals are at the forefront of extracting precious resources from deep within the Earth's surface. The image captures the essence of human power and industrial technology as these workers navigate through a complex network of pipes and equipment. With their expertise, they ensure that the drilling bit and bore shaft remain constantly lubricated with drilling fluid to withstand extreme temperatures and pressures encountered during this arduous process. As we observe these men adjusting various components, it becomes evident that modern oil wells can reach astonishing depths exceeding 12 kilometers. Each section added to the drill pipe measures around 10 meters in length, highlighting both the scale and precision required for successful extraction. Set against a backdrop of rugged terrain, this photograph serves as a reminder of humanity's reliance on fossil fuels for energy production in the 21st century. It symbolizes not only technological advancements but also highlights how industries worldwide heavily depend on dedicated individuals like these Russian drillers. Taken in Noyabrsk back in 2004 by Science Photo Library, this powerful image encapsulates both the challenges faced by those working in this field and their vital contribution to meeting global energy demands.
