Otto Lilienthal and glider, 1895

Otto Lilienthal and glider, 1895. Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896) was a German aviation pioneer, who became known as the Glider King for his many experiments with gliders. He made over 2000 flights from 1891, made several important advances in aviation theory, and managed controlled glides of tens of metres. He died in 1896, falling from a glider during a test flight and breaking his back. He died the next day, but his legacy would later inspire the work by the Wright Brothers on heavier-than-air flight. This photograph is from a collection of negatives owned by the Wright Brothers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Otto Lilienthal, the renowned German aviation pioneer, alongside his glider in 1895. Known as the Glider King for his groundbreaking experiments with gliders, Lilienthal made significant contributions to aviation theory and conducted over 2000 flights starting from 1891. His relentless dedication led him to achieve controlled glides of impressive distances. Tragically, Lilienthal's life was cut short when he fell from a glider during a test flight in 1896, breaking his back. Despite succumbing to his injuries the following day, his legacy would go on to inspire the pioneering work of none other than the Wright Brothers themselves in their pursuit of heavier-than-air flight. The photograph itself is part of an esteemed collection owned by the Wright Brothers and showcases Lilienthal's unwavering determination and passion for flight. In this monochrome image, we see a determined European male aviator standing proudly beside his winged creation—a testament to human ingenuity and technological progress in the late 19th century. Lilienthal's pivotal role in advancing aeronautics cannot be overstated; he paved the way for future generations of flyers and propelled Germany onto the global stage of aviation history. This snapshot serves as a poignant reminder of one man's extraordinary journey towards conquering the skies—an inspiration that continues to resonate even today.
