Otto Lilienthal testing a glider, 1890s

Lilienthal testing a glider in Germany in the 1890s. Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896) was a German aviation pioneer, who became known as the " Glider King" for his many experiments with gliders. He made over 2000 flights from 1891, made several important advances in aviation theory, and managed controlled glides of tens of metres. He died in 1896, falling from a glider during a test flight and breaking his back. He died the next day, but his legacy would later inspire the work by the Wright Brothers on heavier-than-air flight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable moment when Otto Lilienthal, the renowned German aviation pioneer, fearlessly tested a glider in Germany during the 1890s. Known as the "Glider King". Lilienthal dedicated his life to experimenting with gliders and pushing the boundaries of flight. With over 2000 flights under his belt since 1891, Lilienthal made significant advancements in aviation theory and achieved controlled glides spanning tens of meters. His unwavering passion for flight led him to become an inspiration for future pioneers such as the Wright Brothers in their pursuit of heavier-than-air flight. Tragically, Lilienthal's daring endeavors came at a cost. During one fateful test flight, he suffered a devastating fall from a glider that resulted in a broken back. Despite fighting for his life until the next day, his legacy lived on beyond his untimely demise. This historical photograph not only immortalizes Lilienthal's pioneering spirit but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It symbolizes an era where technology was rapidly advancing, paving the way for future breakthroughs in transportation and research. As we gaze upon this monochromatic image capturing a single moment frozen in time, we are reminded of Otto Lilienthal's invaluable contributions to aviation history—a true visionary who dared to dream of soaring through the skies long before it became commonplace.
