Periscope view, early 20th century

Periscope view. Submarine view through a periscope, obtained between 1908 and 1919. The numbers across the top indicate the heading in degrees (between 0 and 360) of the direction of view. Submarines in the USA had been developed since the 1870s, with the US Navys first submarine being purchased in 1900. However, by the time the US entered the First World War in 1917, US submarine technology had fallen behind that used by the British and the Germans. This photograph is from the National Photo Company Collection, consisting mostly of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Periscope View, Early 20th Century" offers a glimpse into the world of submarine technology during a crucial period in history. Taken between 1908 and 1919, this image showcases the view obtained through a periscope on an American submarine. The numbers displayed across the top indicate the heading in degrees, revealing the direction of view. During this time, submarines had already been developed in the United States since the 1870s. However, by World War I when America entered in 1917, their submarine technology lagged behind that of both British and German counterparts. This photograph sheds light on this technological gap. Part of the National Photo Company Collection based mainly in Washington DC, USA, it captures not only historical significance but also highlights advancements made in observation and transportation technologies. The circular periscope provides an optical marvel enabling submariners to observe their surroundings while remaining submerged beneath oceanic depths. The monochrome image portrays a solitary figure peering through the periscope's eyepiece with intense focus. It serves as a reminder of human ingenuity and determination to explore new frontiers even under challenging circumstances. This print is an invaluable piece documenting early underwater transport history within North America's maritime landscape. Its inclusion within Science Photo Library's collection ensures its preservation for future generations to appreciate and learn from our past achievements in naval engineering and innovation.
