Pythagoras (c. 580-500 BC)

Pythagoras founded a secretive, mystic cult which tried to describe the universe in terms of numbers. He found that there is no whole fraction or rational number that is the square root of 2. He taught the Pythagorean theorem:- the squared hypoteneuse length of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of its two other sides. He discovered that the note from a plucked string is proportional to its length and tension. He taught that the Earth is spherical, that all heavenly bodies did not move uniformly and that the morning and evening stars are the same object (Venus). Taken from a 14th century fresco

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic figure of Pythagoras, a renowned mathematician and philosopher who lived between 580-500 BC. Known for founding a secretive and mystic cult, Pythagoras delved into the realm of numbers to unravel the mysteries of the universe. His most significant discovery was that there is no whole fraction or rational number that represents the square root of 2. Pythagoras also imparted his profound knowledge through teachings such as the famous Pythagorean theorem, which states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse's length is equal to the sum of squares of its other two sides. Moreover, he uncovered an intriguing connection between musical notes and their corresponding string lengths and tension. In addition to his mathematical prowess, Pythagoras had remarkable astronomical insights. He believed in a spherical Earth and recognized that celestial bodies did not move uniformly across the sky. Furthermore, he astutely observed that both morning and evening stars were actually one entity – Venus. This stunning portrait from a 14th-century fresco captures Pythagoras' essence as a historical figure whose contributions spanned mathematics, philosophy, music theory, and astronomy. It serves as an evocative reminder of his enduring legacy in shaping our understanding of these disciplines throughout history.
