Resonance experiment

Resonance experiment. Bartons pendulums, used to demonstrate coupling and resonance. At far left is a heavy pendulum, called the driver pendulum. It is coupled (by the connecting string) to the other pendulums, which are lighter and vary in length (a pendulums natural frequency). The apparatus is viewed from the left and the driver pendulum set swinging across the line of sight. The weight of the driver pendulum forces all the pendulums to swing at the driver frequency, but the pendulum with the same frequency (length) resonates with the driver pendulum, receives the most energy from it, and so swings with the largest amplitude. For a view from the side, see A400/113

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing resonance experiment using Bartons pendulums. The apparatus, viewed from the left, showcases a system of pendulums that are coupled together by connecting strings. At the far left is the heavy driver pendulum, which sets the entire system in motion. As the driver pendulum swings across our line of sight, its weight forces all the other lighter and varying-length pendulums to swing at its frequency. However, it is fascinating to observe that one particular pendulum with precisely matching frequency (length) resonates with the driver pendulum and receives maximum energy from it. Consequently, this resonating pendulum exhibits an impressive amplitude in its swinging motion. This educational demonstration serves as a visual representation of coupling and resonance principles in physics. It offers students a hands-on experience to understand how different frequencies interact within a mechanical system. The intricate mechanics behind periodic motion come alive through this experimental setup. The photograph provides an excellent view for classroom discussions or laboratory sessions on topics such as phase, frequency, coupling, mechanics, and resonant systems. Its inclusion in educational materials enhances understanding and engagement among learners studying physics or related subjects. With Science Photo Library's expertise capturing scientific moments like these without commercial intent, this print beautifully encapsulates both the aesthetic appeal and educational value of this resonance experiment.
