Saenger-Horus spaceplane, artwork

Saenger-Horus spaceplane at the separation altitude of 37 kilometres, artwork. This design was part of work carried out in the 1980s and 1990s by Deutsche Aerospace based on designs by Austrian-German engineer Eugen Saenger (1905-1964). The Saenger spaceplane is carrying the smaller HORUS (Hypersonic Orbital Reusable Upper Stage) space shuttle. This system was designed to provide a cheap method of launching astronauts and cargo into space. Powered by jet engines, it would take off from a normal runway, climb to separation altitude, and release the HORUS which would use rockets to propel itself into orbit

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the Saenger-Horus spaceplane, a revolutionary design developed by Deutsche Aerospace in the 1980s and 1990s. Created based on the visionary concepts of Austrian-German engineer Eugen Saenger, this spaceplane aimed to provide an affordable method for launching astronauts and cargo into space. In this stunning illustration, we witness the Saenger spaceplane soaring through Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of 37 kilometers. Accompanying it is the smaller HORUS (Hypersonic Orbital Reusable Upper Stage) space shuttle, which will be released at this separation altitude to propel itself into orbit using rockets. Powered by jet engines, the Saenger-Horus system was designed to take off from a conventional runway before ascending to its separation altitude. This innovative approach eliminated the need for costly and complex launch pads typically associated with traditional spacecraft. The artwork beautifully captures both historical engineering achievements and futuristic technology. The sleek design of these vehicles highlights their advanced capabilities while showcasing their potential impact on transportation beyond our planet's boundaries. Detlev van Ravenswaay's masterful illustration transports us back in time to witness a pivotal moment in aerospace history. It serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of exploration and our unwavering commitment to pushing technological boundaries for greater scientific understanding.
