Simon Marius, German astronomer

Simon Marius (1573-1624), German astronomer. Marius, independently of Galileo, discovered the four major moons of Jupiter. In his work Mundus Jovialis (The world of Jupiter, 1614) he gave them the names they are known by today; Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. He was an early user of telescopes, using them to study the Andromeda galaxy. This woodcut portrait, from 1614, is said to include the first image of a telescope (across bottom)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Simon Marius, a renowned German astronomer from the 17th century. Known for his groundbreaking discoveries independent of Galileo, Marius was the first to observe and name the four major moons of Jupiter - Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. His significant contribution to astronomy is immortalized in his work Mundus Jovialis (The world of Jupiter) published in 1614. In this mesmerizing woodcut portrait dating back to 1614, we catch a glimpse of Marius himself alongside an illustration that is believed to be the first image ever captured through a telescope. This pioneering use of telescopes allowed him to study celestial objects such as the Andromeda galaxy. The monochromatic aesthetic adds an air of authenticity and nostalgia to this vertical composition. The white background accentuates every intricate detail within the artwork while highlighting Marius' profound impact on our understanding of our solar system. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this historical piece with utmost precision and respect for its scientific significance. This print serves as a tribute not only to Simon Marius but also to all those who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of our universe.
