Purple starfish (Pisaster ochraceus) on a seaweed- covered rock at low tide. This starfish inhabits the intertidal zones of the west coast of North America. It feeds mainly on bivalve molluscs, which it opens with its arms. It is able to drop a damaged arm and grow a new one in its place. If enough of the arm is dropped, the arm may also grow into a complete new starfish. Photographed in Bligh Island Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada
