Strangled stinkhorn fungus

Strangled stinkhorn fungus (Staheliomyces cinctus). This is the fruiting body of this fungus. It produces an unpleasant aroma from a slimy area called the gleba (brown). The strangled appearance of this area gives rise to the name of the fungus. Insects attracted to the gleba, such as a species of tropical bee, help spread the fungal spores. Photographed in lowland rainforest in Jama Coaque Reserve (Manabi Province), part of the Choco Biological Region, Ecuador

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intriguing Strangled Stinkhorn Fungus, also known as Staheliomyces cinctus. The image captures the fruiting body of this fungus, which emits an unpleasant aroma from its slimy area called the gleba, depicted in a rich brown hue. The distinctive appearance of this section gives rise to its peculiar name. Found within the lush lowland rainforest of Jama Coaque Reserve in Manabi Province, Ecuador, this specimen is part of the diverse Choco Biological Region. Its presence highlights the remarkable biodiversity found within South America's tropical landscapes. The strangled stinkhorn fungus plays a vital role in nature's cycle by attracting insects like tropical bees to its alluring gleba. These insects inadvertently aid in spreading the fungal spores as they visit and interact with it. Photographer Morley Read has skillfully captured this moment on film, showcasing not only the beauty but also shedding light on important aspects of botany and biology. This photograph serves as a reminder that even decay and decomposition have their place in sustaining life within our ecosystems. With its vibrant colors and intricate details, this print offers viewers a glimpse into Ecuadorian wildlife and underscores the importance of preserving these delicate forest floors where saprophytic organisms like fungi thrive amidst leaf litter.
