Sunspots on the surface of the Sun. These are cooler
Sunspots on the surface of the Sun. These are cooler, darker areas of the Suns visible surface (photosphere) associated with increased solar activity. Sunspots are areas with a strong magnetic field. Each has an umbra (black) surrounded by a penumbra (grey), and usually lasts a few weeks. They occur in two bands on either side of the solar equator. The Sun has an 11-year cycle of activity. Its peak is marked by an increase in sunspot numbers, along with more flares and coronal mass ejections. At the end of the cycle the Suns magnetic field reverses
