Theorem 22, Monas Hieroglyphica (1564). This theorem is one of 24 contained in the work Monas Hieroglyphica by Welsh astrologer John Dee (1527-1608). An example of western Hermeticism and written in a mystical state, it revealed esoteric secrets in astronomy, alchemy, music, mathematics, linguistics, mechanics, and optics. Theorem 22 concerns instructions for producing various pharmacological preparations, with symbols and incomplete descriptions. In the text, Dee states that these mysteries must not be revealed to any but the Initiates", and much of what is written in his book has not been explained."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Theorem 22 from the renowned work Monas Hieroglyphica, authored by the enigmatic Welsh astrologer John Dee in 1564. A true representation of European Hermeticism, this mystical text delves into a vast array of esoteric knowledge spanning astronomy, alchemy, music, mathematics, linguistics, mechanics, and optics. Theorem 22 specifically focuses on intricate instructions for creating diverse pharmacological preparations through symbolic representations and incomplete descriptions. In his book, Dee explicitly emphasizes that these profound mysteries are to be kept exclusively within the circle of Initiates. Consequently, much of what is written remains unexplained till date. This historical artifact offers a glimpse into the secretive world of Elizabethan England's intellectual elite and their fascination with Kabbalah-inspired theories. The image features an intriguing diagram accompanied by Latin text—a testament to Dee's scholarly pursuits and deep understanding of various disciplines. Its publication marked a significant milestone in English history as it brought together ancient wisdom with contemporary scientific thought.
