Ultraviolet image of Saturn showing aurora

Aurora on Saturn. Coloured ultraviolet image showing an aurora near the north pole of Saturn. The aurora is the bright patch at the top of the planet. Scientists estimate the aurora to extend about 2000 kilometres above the cloud tops of Saturn. The aurora is formed when charged cosmic particles are trapped by the planets magnetic field and collide with atmospheric gases (molecular and atomic hydrogen). These collisions cause the gas to glow at far-UV wavelengths, between 110 nanometres and 160 nanometres. This image was made using the Hubble Space Telescope when Saturn was 1.3 billion kilometres from Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of an aurora on Saturn, showcasing the planet's ethereal charm. In this ultraviolet image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, a vibrant aurora can be seen near Saturn's north pole, illuminating the darkness of space. The aurora appears as a radiant patch at the top of the planet, captivating viewers with its celestial glow. Scientists estimate that this awe-inspiring phenomenon extends approximately 2000 kilometers above Saturn's cloud tops. The formation of such an enchanting display occurs when charged cosmic particles become trapped by Saturn's magnetic field and collide with atmospheric gases like molecular and atomic hydrogen. These collisions generate a luminous effect in far-UV wavelengths ranging from 110 to 160 nanometers. Capturing this extraordinary moment from a distance of 1.3 billion kilometers away from Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope allows us to witness the wonders of our universe up close. This image serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about distant worlds and our relentless pursuit of knowledge in fields like science, astronomy, cosmology, and planetary exploration. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph courtesy of Science Photo Library, we are reminded once again that there is so much more beyond our own planet waiting to be discovered and understood.
