Upsilon Andromedae planetary system
In 1999 the scientists Marcy, Butler and Fischer announced the detection of the first planetary system around a normal star beyond our Sun. Three planets were found orbiting the star Upsilon Andromedae, a 4th-magnitude star, 44 light-years from our home. Two of the planets are more massive than our Jupiter. The smaller inner-one orbits the star within 4, 6 days, the bigger outer planets in 242 days and about 3 years

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Upsilon Andromedae planetary system, a groundbreaking discovery made by scientists Marcy, Butler, and Fischer in 1999. Located 44 light-years away from our home, this extraordinary system revolves around a star known as Upsilon Andromedae - a fourth-magnitude star resembling our own Sun. Within this alien planetary system, three planets have been detected. Two of these massive planets surpass the size of Jupiter, making them truly colossal entities. The smaller inner planet completes its orbit around the star within an astonishingly short span of just 4 to 6 days. On the other hand, the larger outer planets take approximately 242 days and nearly three years to complete their orbits. The surface depicted in this artistic illustration is reminiscent of rocky terrain with craters scattered across it. This mesmerizing image offers us a glimpse into cosmological wonders beyond our solar system's boundaries. It represents both the marvels of astronomical exploration and humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries that lie among distant stars. Detlev van Ravenswaay's exquisite artwork captures not only the scientific significance but also evokes a sense of awe and wonderment towards these distant celestial bodies. As we delve deeper into understanding exoplanets like those found in Upsilon Andromedae, we expand our knowledge about potential life-sustaining environments beyond Earth while appreciating the vastness and diversity present throughout our universe.
