She spent almost three days in orbit, circling the Earth 48 times. Tereshkova was one of several female parachutists selected for this mission. They were trained separately from the male cosmonauts, and it was 19 years before another woman went into space. After her flight, Tereshkova trained as an engineer, and later became a politician. Her flight made her famous in the USSR and around the world. Her honours include Hero of the Soviet Union (on her left lapel), the Order of Lenin, and Order of the October Revolution. This print showcases Valentina Tereshkova, the remarkable Soviet cosmonaut who made history as the first woman in space. Born in 1937, Tereshkova embarked on her groundbreaking journey on June 16,1963, when she fearlessly flew solo aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft. Spending nearly three days orbiting Earth and completing an astonishing 48 revolutions around our planet, she left an indelible mark on human exploration.
