Voskhod-2 rocket on launchpad
Voskhod-2. The rocket carrying the Voskhod-2 spacecraft sitting on tis launchpad. Voskhod-2 was launched on 18 March 1965, carrying cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Pavel Belyayev. During the 26-hour mission Leonov performed the first ever spacewalk. He used a special inflatable airlock to exit the spacecrafts capsule, while Belyayev remained inside. The spacewalk took place over the Ukraine and Caucasus mountains, and lasted 10 minutes. An umbilical cable carried oxygen to Leonov, as well as acting as his lifeline. The failure of one retro-rocket led to the spacecraft landing 2000 kilometres off-course

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Voskhod-2 rocket poised on its launchpad, ready to embark on a historic mission. On that momentous day of 18 March 1965, this Soviet spacecraft carried two brave cosmonauts, Alexei Leonov and Pavel Belyayev, into the vastness of space. During their remarkable 26-hour journey, Leonov achieved an extraordinary feat - he became the first human to ever venture outside a spacecraft and float freely in the weightlessness of space. Using a specially designed inflatable airlock, Leonov gracefully exited the capsule while Belyayev remained inside. The awe-inspiring backdrop for this groundbreaking spacewalk was provided by the stunning landscapes of Ukraine and Caucasus mountains. For ten breathtaking minutes, Leonov floated above our planet's surface with only an umbilical cable connecting him to life-sustaining oxygen and ensuring his safety. However, not everything went according to plan during this pioneering mission. A malfunctioning retro-rocket caused the Voskhod-2 spacecraft to land a staggering 2000 kilometers off-course upon reentry. This photograph from Science Photo Library captures both the triumphs and challenges faced by these courageous cosmonauts as they pushed boundaries in their quest for knowledge beyond Earth's atmosphere. It serves as a testament to humanity's indomitable spirit of exploration that has propelled us forward throughout history.
