Weighbridge and hygrometer, 18th century

Page of illustrations from an 18th century magazine. The item labelled II is a design of a weighbridge. The side view (right) has been rotated to appear upright. This was a novel design in which the object to be weighed need only be sat on the bridge section (as today), at the time it was more common to sling the load under a weighing arm. At centre (marked IV and V) is a design of hygometer, or humidity measuring device. At left, labelled III, is an unusual fish described as being green in colour and referred to as a sea adder. Items VI and VII are described as a fish called an eye sucker. These illustrations appeared in the Gentlemans Magazine in 1748

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 18th century, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of scientific innovation. The page of illustrations from an 18th-century magazine showcases various intriguing objects and designs that were at the forefront of technological advancements during that time. At the center of attention is a unique weighbridge design (labeled II), which revolutionized the way objects were weighed. Unlike traditional methods involving weighing arms, this novel design allowed for easy measurement by simply placing the object on the bridge section. To emphasize its ingenuity, even in today's standards, we see a side view (right) cleverly rotated to appear upright. Moving towards the middle (marked IV and V), we encounter an intricate hygrometer – a device used to measure humidity levels in the air. This beautifully engraved illustration highlights both its delicate craftsmanship and importance in understanding meteorology during this era. To add further intrigue, labeled III presents an unusual fish known as a sea adder described as green in color. Its depiction serves as a reminder of how exploration and discovery extended beyond land boundaries into underwater realms. Lastly, items VI and VII depict peculiar fishes referred to as eye suckers. Although their exact nature remains mysterious, these enigmatic creatures captured imaginations with their distinctive features. Preserved through meticulous engraving techniques on monochrome paper, these illustrations originally appeared in Gentlemans Magazine in 1748 - artifacts that offer us invaluable insights into scientific progress during one of history's most transformative centuries.
