EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1913 showcases the beginning of a new journey for children at Whiteley Wood Open Air School. Established in 1909 by Sheffield City Council, this unique institution catered to children aged 10 and over who suffered from anaemia, tuberculosis, and general debility. The school provided specialized education in an open-air setting, allowing these young individuals to breathe fresh air while recovering their health. In the photograph, we witness a group of excited children boarding motor omnibuses on Leopold Street. Their faces radiate hope and anticipation as they embark on their daily commute to Whiteley Wood Open Air School. These buses were not just modes of transportation; they symbolized a lifeline for these students, connecting them to an environment that would nurture their physical well-being and academic growth. Originally housed in the premises of the closed Whiteley Wood School, this pioneering institution later relocated to Cottage Lane. Over its long history spanning more than seven decades, Whiteley Wood Open Air School became synonymous with compassion and dedication towards improving the lives of its students. Sadly, all good things must come to an end. In 1980, after serving countless generations of children with care and expertise, Whiteley Wood Open Air School closed its doors for the final time. However, this remarkable print preserves a moment frozen in time—a testament to the profound impact this institution had on countless lives throughout its storied existence. (Word count: 245)
