Artists concept of Neptune as seen from its largest moon Triton
A full Neptune washes Tritons frozen surface with an indigo light, the only source of illumination on this now Tritons dark side. Fortuitous alignment of the Sun, Triton and Neptune causes this satellites shadow to fall on Neptunes distant cloud tops 220 thousand miles away. This view is from within a deep, crater-like depression on Tritons northern hemisphere.
There are many such crater-like depressions on Tritons northern hemisphere. While these depressions look like impact craters, their similar size and spacing suggest that they were created by some other process. Their origin is still unknown, but may involve local melting and collapse of the icy surface. The scarcity of impact craters suggest that this surface is relatively young by solar system standards, probably less than a few billion years old. The depression in this image is about 15 miles in diameter; the ridge on the horizon is approximately seven miles from the mesa in the foreground

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's imaginative concept of Neptune as observed from its largest moon, Triton. Bathed in a mesmerizing indigo light emanating from the full Neptune, Triton's frozen surface is illuminated, revealing a breathtaking sight on its dark side. A rare celestial alignment of the Sun, Triton, and Neptune casts a shadow of this satellite onto Neptunes distant cloud tops situated 220 thousand miles away. The photograph offers us a unique perspective from within a deep crater-like depression nestled in Triton's northern hemisphere. Tritons landscape is adorned with numerous similar depressions resembling impact craters; however, their uniform size and spacing hint at an alternative formation process that remains shrouded in mystery. Speculations suggest local melting and subsequent collapse of the icy surface might be responsible for these enigmatic features. Remarkably devoid of impact craters, this relatively young surface - estimated to be less than a few billion years old by solar system standards - further intrigues scientists. In this particular image captured by Walter Myers for Stocktrek Images, we witness a vast depression spanning approximately 15 miles in diameter while gazing towards the horizon where an impressive ridge stands roughly seven miles away from the foreground mesa. This awe-inspiring portrayal invites viewers to marvel at the wonders hidden within our cosmic neighborhood while igniting curiosity about the secrets yet to be unveiled on distant worlds like Triton.
