The Milky Way center aglow with dust

January 10, 2006 - The Milky Way Center Aglow with Dust. Our Milky Way is a dusty place. So dusty, in fact, that we cannot see the center of the galaxy in visible light. But when the Spitzer Space Telescope set its infrared eyes on the galactic center, it captured this spectacular view.
Taken with just one of Spitzers cameras (at a wavelength of 8 microns), the image highlights the regions exceptionally bright and dusty clouds, lit up by young massive stars. Individual stars can also be seen as tiny dots scattered throughout the dust. The top mosaic shows a portion of the galactic center that stretches across a distance of 760 light-years. It shows emissions from heated molecules in dust clouds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the center of our Milky Way galaxy aglow with dust. The Milky Way is known for its dusty nature, making it impossible to see its center in visible light. However, the Spitzer Space Telescope changed that by using its infrared eyes to reveal this stunning view. Taken with one of Spitzer's cameras at a wavelength of 8 microns, the image showcases exceptionally bright and dusty clouds illuminated by young massive stars. Amidst the dust, tiny dots representing individual stars can also be seen scattered throughout. The top mosaic portion of the galactic center displayed in this photo stretches across an impressive distance of 760 light-years. It reveals emissions from heated molecules in dust clouds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This image not only highlights the celestial beauty within our galaxy but also provides valuable insights into astrophysics, cosmology, and stellar evolution. It serves as a reminder of the majestic wonders that exist beyond our solar system and emphasizes the infinite expanse of space. With no people present in this outdoor scene captured from space, this color photograph showcases a mesmerizing starfield filled with red hues and illuminated brightness. Its sheer visual splendor invites us to contemplate both our place within the universe and appreciate its awe-inspiring grandeur.
