EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Empire flying boat, Canopus, as it undergoes meticulous preparations for its historic journey from England to South Africa. The year is 1937, a time between the wars when aviation was rapidly evolving and opening up new possibilities for global travel. The Canopus, belonging to Imperial Airways, stands tall in all its glory after being overhauled at Hythe in Southampton. With its sleek design and impressive size, this magnificent flying boat is set to embark on an inaugural flight that will connect England with rural South Africa. As the aircraft prepares for departure, anticipation fills the air. Not only will it carry ten fortunate passengers who are about to experience a remarkable adventure but also more than a ton of mail that symbolizes the growing importance of international communication during this era. Adding another layer of significance to this momentous occasion is the imminent launch of the post offices world airmail scheme. In just one week's time, letters from around the globe will be carried on this very route at an affordable rate of 1 1/2d per half ounce. This photograph serves as a timeless reminder of technological progress and human ambition during an era defined by exploration and innovation. It encapsulates both the grandeur of aviation history and our relentless pursuit to bridge distances through air travel.
