The fuselage of a Horsa glider - the type used by airborne troops in World War II

The fuselage of a Horsa glider - the type used by airborne troops in World War II - is being converted into a home for a London businessman by Mr. Arthur Bedford, a building contractor at Southbourn, Bournemouth, Hampshire. The glider-home will have three rooms - a bedroom measuring 10 ft by 7 ft, a living room 15 ft by 7 ft, and a kitchenette 8 ft by 7 ft. If the experiment is successful, the builder will convert more gliders. People baffled by the housing shortage will be able to have these homes built quite cheaply on their own sites. Photo shows men working on the exterior of the glider-home - 11th June 1947.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the remarkable transformation of a Horsa glider fuselage into a cozy home for a London businessman. Mr. Arthur Bedford, an ingenious building contractor from Southbourn, Bournemouth, Hampshire, undertakes the task of converting this relic from World War II into a practical living space. As housing shortages persist and people yearn for affordable solutions, this experiment holds great promise. The glider-home is taking shape with men diligently working on its exterior on that sunny day of June 11th in 1947. The fuselage stands tall as it undergoes its metamorphosis into three functional rooms: a snug bedroom measuring 10 ft by 7 ft, a spacious living room spanning 15 ft by 7 ft, and a compact kitchenette occupying an area of 8 ft by 7 ft. This innovative approach to temporary accommodation showcases both imagination and adaptability in addressing the pressing needs of those without shelter or adequate housing. With windows carefully installed and French doors leading to the outside world, these converted gliders offer hope to many who long for improved quality of life. If successful, Mr. Bedford plans to convert more gliders into homes that can be built inexpensively on individual sites across the country. This creative solution brings together historical remnants with modern necessities while providing much-needed relief amidst challenging circumstances. As we gaze upon this photograph capturing progress atop ladders and stacks of tiles adorning the roofline, we are reminded that sometimes our greatest challenges inspire inventive solutions born out of necessity - proving once again that where there is willpower and resourcefulness, even within limited means or unconventional spaces like atop old war machines - dreams can find their place called home.
