A Thrill of the Ulster Race - Capturing the Unforgettable Moment of Motorcyclist's Car Crash
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This remarkable photograph, taken during the Ulster Tourist Trophy car race in Belfast, encapsulates both the exhilaration and danger that permeate such high-speed events. Freddy Dixon, a daredevil motorcyclist known for his audacious stunts, provided spectators with heart-stopping thrills as he navigated through the treacherous track. However, on this fateful day in 1932, Dixon's daring escapades took an unexpected turn. As he sped around Quarry Corner at breakneck speed in his Riley car, disaster struck. The powerful vehicle crashed through a hedge and violently overturned, sending both Dixon and his mechanic hurtling out onto the unforgiving terrain. The impact was captured by an astute photographer who managed to freeze this split-second moment forever. In black and white monochrome tones that add to its timeless appeal, this photograph showcases Dixon's Riley car defying gravity as it breaches the boundaries of safety. While Dixon covered an impressive distance of 175 miles within two hours before succumbing to misfortune, his mechanic suffered injuries to his face during their dramatic ejection from the vehicle. This image serves as a testament not only to their courage but also to the inherent risks faced by those who push themselves beyond limits in pursuit of victory.
