Machette in hand, Farmer James Lee, who recently drove a tractor to Buckingham Palace
Machette in hand, Farmer James Lee, who recently drove a tractor to Buckingham Palace, invites bailiffs to test the keenness of the blade when they attempt to evict him from his farm at Crawley, Sussex. Previously, he had halted the oncoming officers with a large fire extinguisher at the front door. When they went round to the back, Farmer Lee was waiting for them, armed with the machette. The fiery farmer chased a workman who tried to force the back door, left the house unguarded, and the bailiffs entered. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Lee left with his wife, Joyce, for an undisclosed destination somewhere in Sussex. The farmer was evicted by the New Towns Commission to protect the interest, health and amenity of local residents, because he kept pigs in breach of a tenancy agreement made in 1957. - Photo taken 26th July 1963.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the fearless Farmer James Lee brandishing a machette in defense of his beloved farm at Crawley, Sussex. This courageous farmer recently made headlines when he drove a tractor all the way to Buckingham Palace, making a bold statement about his determination and resilience. Facing eviction by bailiffs sent by the New Towns Commission due to breaching a tenancy agreement from 1957 that prohibited him from keeping pigs on the property, Farmer Lee refused to go down without a fight. When officers attempted to enter his home, he halted them with a large fire extinguisher at the front door. Undeterred, they circled around to the back where they were met by an unwavering Farmer Lee armed with his trusty machette. With fiery determination and unwavering resolve, this defiant farmer chased away anyone who dared challenge him or threaten his livelihood. However, despite his valiant efforts, he was eventually overpowered as bailiffs entered through an unguarded entrance. Shortly after this intense showdown took place, Mr. Lee and his wife Joyce left their cherished farm for an undisclosed location within Sussex. The evictions were carried out in order to protect the interests and well-being of local residents. This powerful image captures not only one man's struggle against authority but also raises questions about living conditions and housing rights during that era. It serves as a reminder of how far individuals are willing to go in defense of what they hold dear – even if it means taking up arms against those seeking their removal.
