EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1913, we catch a glimpse of the Romanovs, the ruling family of Russia during a time of great change and turmoil. At the center stands Nicholas II, Tsar of Russia from 1894 to 1917. His regal presence is softened by the loving embrace of his wife and children surrounding him. Among them is their youngest son, the Tsarevich Alexi, whose innocent smile hides a tragic secret. Afflicted with Haemophilia, a rare genetic disorder that affects blood clotting, young Alexi's life would be marred by constant pain and uncertainty. Despite his illness, he radiates an undeniable joy in this moment captured forever on film. The image speaks volumes about the complexities of royal life; behind opulent palaces and grand titles lies a family united by love and burdened by responsibilities. It offers us a window into Russian history at its most pivotal point. Little did they know that just four years later their world would be shattered as revolution swept across Russia. The Romanov dynasty would come to an abrupt end with Nicholas II's abdication in 1917 followed by their tragic execution in 1918. This photograph serves as both a poignant reminder of their once-glorious reign and as testament to the fragility of power in times marked by political upheaval.
