A Subalterns Experiences during the Recent Russian War Scare in India. Peace, War

A SUBALTERNs EXPERIENCES DURING THE RECENT RUSSIAN WAR SCARE IN INDIA. PEACE, WAR, AND THEN PEACE AGAIN: 1. Hurrah! His Leave to England is Granted. 2. Having sold all He possesses, He sits down for a final Chat with his Brother Officers. 3. He slumbers peacefully during the long Night Journey by Rail. 4. And early in the Morning awakens to gaze with rapture at the Open Sea. 5. A few Hours later He is dashing off to the " Trooper." 6. After seeing His Luggage bestowed in the Hold, He receives a Telegram. 7. Its Contents: " All Leave stopped; Return at Once." 8. The Telegraph Messengers Precipitate Flight. 9. Hustled instanter off the Ship, He finds Himself ashore with just His Cabin Baggage; all the Rest is in the " Trooper s" Hold. 10. His Brother Officers seem highly amused that a Fellow should be sent back with only about what He stands up in. 11. However, this matters but little, as the 70 lb. Service Kit is the Order of the Day, and a Soldier-like Kit too! 12. " PEACE! I ve lost my Passage, I ve lost my Leave, I ve sold everything, I ve Bought a Service Kit, I m 50l. out of Pocket, and, after all, its Peace. Who will recoup meja" Echo answers, " Not the Government."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Subaltern's Experiences during the Recent Russian War Scare in India. Peace, War, and then Peace Again" captures the tumultuous journey of a young subaltern amidst uncertain times. In this series of twelve snapshots frozen in time, we witness the rollercoaster of emotions experienced by our protagonist. The first image shows sheer jubilation as his long-awaited leave to England is granted. However, reality soon sets in as he sells all his possessions and engages in a final heartfelt conversation with his fellow officers before departing. As he embarks on a night journey by rail, exhaustion takes over and he slumbers peacefully until morning when he awakens to behold the vast open sea with pure rapture. But fate has other plans for him. Just hours later, an unexpected telegram arrives abruptly halting his leave and demanding immediate return. The subsequent images depict frantic chaos as telegraph messengers rush him off the ship without any belongings except for his cabin baggage. Amidst laughter from his comrades at this unfortunate turn of events, our subaltern finds solace in embracing soldier-like resilience embodied by the 70 lb. service kit that becomes essential for survival. In a poignant moment captured towards the end, our protagonist laments how peace has cost him dearly - lost passage, lost leave, sold possessions - leaving him £50 out of pocket with no hope of reimbursement from an indifferent government. Through this print collection from Universal Images Group (UIG), we are reminded that even amidst peace there can be personal battles fought and sacrifices made without recompense or recognition.
