Honey bee eye
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the compound eye of the honeybee, Apis mellifera. The eye is adorned with long bristles which largely obscure the hexagonal shape of the eye's many facets, or "ommatidia". Hairs on the bee's body are associated with its role as a carrier of pollen, & they eye bristles can also perform this role. A single, tiny pollen grain is caught in the bristles on the edge of the eye in the top right corner of the picture. The base of one of the bee's jointed antennae is at bottom right. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size, x180 at 8x10-inch size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 3.31, page 60
