Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterium Featured 2 Aug 1993 Image

Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterium

Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a transverse section through a Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterium. In this section the internal structures of the cell resemble a "face": the "eyes" (blue) are intracellular granules; the "mouth" (red) contains cytoplasm and is shaped by a cell membrane. Many such membranes make up the cell wall. Fusobacterium nucleatum typically are long, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria, tapered at both ends. They occur in the dental plaque that forms on the surface of teeth. These bacteria ferment carbohydrates to lactic acid; plaque is a cause of periodontal disease and tooth decay in humans.
