Infamous as Fougasse, Kenneth Bird was a member of the Royal Engineers during World War I. He got the inspiration for his pen name from an anti-personnel mine that was infamous for its unpredictable performance; it would sometimes work as intended and other times it wouldn't. With just a few strong, flowing lines, Fougass, the only artist to ever hold the position of editor at Punch magazine, developed a sophisticated technique for cartooning people, objects, and landscapes. 'Careless Talk Costs Lives,' which he drew for a series of government posters during World War II, is one of his most famous cartoons.
