Fra-Ship-France

The French prestigious ocean liner France is saluted by the crowd, as she leaves Le Havre harbour, on January 03, 1962, for its first transatlantic trip. - The France was a Compagnie Gnrale Transatlantique ocean liner, constructed by the Chantiers de l Atlantique shipyard at Saint-Nazaire. Launched 11 May 1960, it was put into service in February 1962, combining regular transatlantic crossings - six days and nights - with winter cruises, as well as two world circumnavigations. The France was later renamed SS Norway and undertook mostly cruises for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). (Photo by - / AFP)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a historic moment as the magnificent French ocean liner, the France, bids farewell to Le Havre harbour on January 03,1962. The crowd gathered at the harbor salutes with admiration and awe as this prestigious vessel embarks on its inaugural transatlantic journey. Constructed by the renowned Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, the France was an epitome of elegance and luxury. Launched on May 11,1960, it commenced service in February 1962. This grand ship offered not only regular transatlantic crossings but also winter cruises and even two world circumnavigations. As time went by, the France underwent a transformation and was later renamed SS Norway when it began serving Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). However, it continued to enchant passengers with its opulent interiors and impeccable service while cruising through picturesque destinations. This vertical photograph captures more than just a ship departing; it encapsulates an era of maritime glory. The misty backdrop adds an air of mystery to this already mesmerizing scene. It reminds us of the romance associated with ocean travel during that period. Preserved by Agence France-Presse (AFP), this remarkable image showcases both our fascination with transportation history and our enduring love for exploration across vast oceans. Let it serve as a reminder of how ships like these once connected continents and sparked dreams of adventure within all who beheld them.
