GEOLOGY: K-T boundary - Close-up of the K-T boundary claystone layer at the Sussex locality, Wyoming, USA
At bottom of the image is the mudstone of the Lance Formation (Cretaceous). On top is a coal bed of the Tullock Member of the Fort Union Formation (Tertiary). The K-T boundary layer is the gray to white kaolinitic claystone, less than 2 cm thick. On top of it is a darker, laminated layer a few millimeters thick, containing sand grains, many of them showing multiple sets of parallel fractures ("shocked quartz") under the microscope. Iridium can be detected in the claystone layer and in the carbonaceous layer immediately above it. (Reference: USGS)

Unearthing the Secrets of Time - A Close Encounter with the K-T Boundary

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported to the Sussex locality in Wyoming, USA, where a remarkable geological discovery awaits. The image showcases a close-up view of the K-T boundary claystone layer, an enigmatic slice of Earth's history. At first glance, it may seem like just another layer of rock, but upon closer inspection, its significance becomes apparent. Sandwiched between the Lance Formation mudstone and the Tullock Member coal bed of the Fort Union Formation lies this thin gray to white kaolinitic claystone layer. But what makes it truly fascinating is what lies above - a darker laminated layer containing sand grains exhibiting multiple sets of parallel fractures known as "shocked quartz". It's like nature's own fingerprint left behind by cataclysmic events that unfolded millions of years ago. Delving deeper into its secrets reveals traces of iridium within both layers – a telltale sign associated with one of Earth's most infamous chapters: the mass extinction event that wiped out dinosaurs and reshaped life on our planet forever. So join us on this thrilling journey through time as we explore these ancient strata and unlock clues about prehistoric life. This print serves as a testament to human curiosity and scientific exploration – reminding us that even in seemingly ordinary rocks lie extraordinary stories waiting to be unearthed.
