EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned Scottish missionary and African explorer, David Livingstone, during his expedition in 1849. In this image, taken around 1878, Livingstone is seen holding a child's hand as he arrives at Lake Ngami in Botswana with his attendants and an ox-drawn wagon. Livingstone (1813-1873) was a trailblazer who made significant contributions to geographical exploration and Christian missionary work in Africa. He achieved remarkable feats such as being the first European to discover the majestic Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. However, his quest for discovering the source of the Nile led him to fall seriously ill in the late 1860s and go missing. It was not until 1871 that he was found by Henry Morton Stanley. Sadly, Livingstone never fully recovered from his illness and eventually passed away in Bangwelulu, Zambia. The chromolithograph print showcases vibrant colors that bring this historical moment to life. It serves as a testament to Livingstone's dedication to both exploration and religion while highlighting Africa's beauty and diversity. This photograph provides us with a glimpse into an era when intrepid explorers like David Livingstone ventured into uncharted territories, pushing boundaries both geographically and spiritually. Through this image, we are reminded of Livingstone's enduring legacy as one of history's most influential figures in African exploration and Christian mission work.
