The Lambeth Election - the Hustings on Kennington Common, 1850. Creator: Unknown

The Lambeth Election - the Hustings on Kennington Common, 1850....nomination of candidates for the representation in Parliament of the [London] borough of Lambeth...a considerable number of persons surrounded the hustings...Mr. Onslow, the returning officer, briefly reminded the electors of the importance of the privilege which they were about to exercise, and hoped that they would conduct themselves throughout the whole proceedings with proper decorum, and allow to each of the candidates a fair and impartial hearing...it was quite apparent to all, after the first hour's polling, that Mr. [William] Williams was the most likely candidate to obtain the vacant seat...Mr. Onslow...made the official declaration of the poll...Mr. Williams was received with three cheers; Sir Charles Napier by some slight cheering, mingled with hisses; and Mr. Palmer with faint cheering'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, entitled 'The Lambeth Election - the Hustings on Kennington Common, 1850,' offers a glimpse into the rich history of political campaigns in 19th century Britain. The image captures the bustling scene of the nomination of candidates for the representation of the London borough of Lambeth in Parliament. A considerable crowd of people, mostly men, gathered around the hustings, eagerly anticipating the proceedings. Mr. Onslow, the returning officer, addressed the electors, reminding them of the importance of the privilege they were about to exercise and urging them to maintain decorum throughout the process. After the first hour of polling, it became clear that Mr. William Williams was the frontrunner for the vacant seat. The official declaration of the poll followed, and Mr. Williams was met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. Sir Charles Napier received some cheers mixed with hisses, while Mr. Palmer received only faint cheers. The atmosphere was electric, with placards and signs adorning the stage, reflecting the intensity of the political climate. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a fascinating insight into the political campaigns of the Victorian era. The old boys network and the old boys club were prevalent during this time, and this image encapsulates the spirit of competition and the importance of securing a seat in Parliament. The photograph is a testament to the passion and dedication of the candidates and the electors, and serves as a metaphor for the enduring power of democracy and the right to vote.
