Taken around 1910 by Bassano Ltd, this portrait showcases the distinguished features of Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916). Lord Kitchener's military achievements were remarkable. He successfully regained control of Sudan for Egypt after his victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. In addition to his military prowess, Lord Kitchener held the position of War Minister from 1914 until his untimely demise in 1916. The significance of this portrait extends beyond its historical context. It became widely recognized during World War I when it was used on an influential army recruitment poster.
