Lord Kitchener, c1910, (1919). Portrait of British Field Marshal, diplomat and statesman Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916). Kitchener regained the Sudan for Egypt by his victory at the Battle of Omdurman (1898). He was commander of British forces during the Boer War (1899-1902) and served as War Minister from 1914 to 1916. His portrait was used on a famous World War I army recruitment poster. Kitchener drowned when HMS Hampshire, carrying him to Russia, was sunk by a German mine in the North Atlantic in 1916. This print captures the iconic image of Lord Kitchener, a renowned British Field Marshal, diplomat, and statesman. Taken around 1910 by Bassano Ltd, this portrait showcases the distinguished features of Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916). Lord Kitchener's military achievements were remarkable. He successfully regained control of Sudan for Egypt after his victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. During the Boer War from 1899 to 1902, he served as commander of British forces. In addition to his military prowess, Lord Kitchener held the position of War Minister from 1914 until his untimely demise in 1916. The significance of this portrait extends beyond its historical context. It became widely recognized during World War I when it was used on an influential army recruitment poster. This powerful image symbolized patriotism and encouraged men to join the war effort.
