The town, forts and harbours of Sebastopol, 1854. Artist: Edmund Walker
The town, forts and harbours of Sebastopol, 1854. View of Sevastopol, a major port and naval base on the Crimean Peninsula, looking towards the Black Sea. In 1784 Catherine the Great of Russia ordered a fortress to be built there. A notable event in the towns history was the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-55) carried out by the British, French, Sardinian, and Turkish troops during the Crimean War. The city is administered as a federal city of the Russian Federation following Crimeas annexation by Russia in 2014, though Ukraine and most of the UN member countries continue to regard Sevastopol as a city with special status within Ukraine

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "The town, forts and harbours of Sebastopol, 1854" offers a mesmerizing aerial view of Sevastopol. Painted by the talented artist Edmund Walker in the 19th century, this print showcases the historical significance of this major port and naval base on the Crimean Peninsula. Sevastopol's story dates back to 1784 when Catherine the Great commissioned its fortress construction. However, it gained international attention during the Crimean War with the infamous Siege of Sevastopol (1854-55). British, French, Sardinian, and Turkish troops carried out this significant event against Russian forces. Today, Sevastopol is administered as a federal city within Russia following Crimea's annexation in 2014. Nevertheless, Ukraine and most UN member countries still regard it as a city with special status within Ukraine due to ongoing territorial disputes. In this monochrome masterpiece captured by Nathaniel Whittock for Day & Son publishers under Lloyd Brothers' imprint at that time captures not only geographical features but also highlights naval warfare elements. The sailing ships dotting the Black Sea add an air of grandeur to this historic scene. As we admire Walker's lithograph today through The Print Collector's lens without any commercial use intentions mentioned here let us appreciate its ability to transport us back in time. It serves as a reminder of both past conflicts and enduring geopolitical complexities that continue to shape our world today.
