Work began on the site in March 1958 and construction was completed for the new school term in September 1959. The co-educational grammar school accommodated 720 pupils. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the history of Arnold County High School. Taken from an upper window in the science block, the image showcases dedicated workers diligently spreading gravel on the roofs of lower school buildings. The view, looking south-west, offers a glimpse into the construction process that took place between March 1958 and September 1959. During its heyday, this co-educational grammar school proudly accommodated 720 pupils who were eager to pursue their education. However, as time passed and educational needs evolved, another school was built nearby in the mid-1960s. Eventually, in 1974, these two institutions merged to form a comprehensive establishment. The Laing-built structures depicted here served as an emblem of knowledge and growth for several decades until they were sadly demolished in 2017. This poignant photograph serves as a testament to the countless memories made within those walls by generations of students. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded not only of physical construction but also of intellectual development and personal growth. It symbolizes progress and transformation within our educational system during the vibrant era of the 1950s. This remarkable image is part of Historic England Archive's collection - preserving moments like these for future generations to appreciate and reflect upon our shared heritage.
