Holiday, born in St. Johns Wood in 1879, spent his early years watching the Royal Horse Artillery from his window, marking his first encounter with horses. He went on to receive an education at Westminster and study at the R.A. Schools before working as an illustrator for notable publications such as The Graphic, The Tatler, and The Illustrated London News. During the First World War, Holiday served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery on the Western Front.
