EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of surprise and chaos as a mule from The Ammunition Column breaks free, causing a stir amongst the soldiers of the Royal Field Artillery. In the foreground, we see Captain Gilbert Holiday, with a look of amusement and perhaps a hint of relief, as he attempts to regain control of the situation. Holiday, born in St. Johns Wood in 1879, spent his early years watching the Royal Horse Artillery from his window, marking his first encounter with horses. He went on to receive an education at Westminster and study at the R.A. Schools before working as an illustrator for notable publications such as The Graphic, The Tatler, and The Illustrated London News. During the First World War, Holiday served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery on the Western Front. It was during this time that he painted many pictures for army messes, capturing the raw emotion and realities of the war. This experience undoubtedly influenced his ability to portray the playful yet chaotic scene before us. The mule, a vital yet unpredictable component of the ammunition column, adds an element of unpredictability to the otherwise structured military formation. This photograph is a testament to the human spirit and the unexpected moments that can arise even in the midst of military life.
