Aramus guarauna, commonly known as the Limpkin, is depicted in this stunning hand-coloured aquatint plate from John James Audubon's "Birds of America" (Plate 377). This remarkable illustration, created between 1835 and 1838, showcases the Limpkin's intricate anatomy and distinctive features, as captured by Audubon's keen observational skills. The Limpkin is a wading bird belonging to the family Aramidae, and is native to the Americas. The Limpkin in this illustration is shown in the act of running, with its long, spotted neck extended and its large, downward-curved bill pointed towards the ground. The Limpkin is an agile bird, capable of running swiftly both in and out of water. Its powerful legs propel it forward, making it an efficient hunter in its wetland habitat. The Limpkin's anatomy is fascinating. Its long, neck, which is more than half the length of its body, is covered in fine, white feathers. Its plumage is predominantly grey and brown, with black and white markings on its wings and back. The Limpkin's legs and feet are bright pink, and its eyes are a vivid orange. The aquatint technique used to create this illustration allowed for a great deal of detail and texture, particularly in the Limpkin's feathers and the water droplets on its body.
