EDITORS COMMENTS
Blessed Mariana of Jesus, born Ana Maria Navarro Guevara and Romero (1565-1624), is depicted in this beautifully colored engraving by Capuz from the 19th century. Mariana was a Spanish tertiary of the Order of Mercy, a religious order founded in the 15th century to provide ransom for Christians held captive by the Moors in Spain. Mariana's deep faith and devotion to the Virgin Mary and Jesus led her to join the Order at a young age. The image shows Mariana in the traditional habit of the Mercedarian tertiaries, with a white veil and a red scapular. She is shown kneeling in front of an ornate table, holding a book and gazing up at the crucifix on the wall above. Mariana's aura of holiness is emphasized by the golden halo around her head and the aureole of roses and lilies that surrounds her. The cross on the wall behind her is adorned with the image of the Virgin Mary, further emphasizing Mariana's devotion to the Mother of God. This engraving is a testament to the rich history of Catholicism and Christianism in Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries. Mariana's life and faith serve as an inspiration to all those who seek to deepen their relationship with God and live a life of service to others. This image, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, is a beautiful reminder of the enduring power of faith and the importance of the spiritual life in the modern age.
