Charles Richard Sumner (1790-1874), an English churchman and Bishop of Winchester, is depicted in this striking portrait photograph. Sumner was born on October 13, 1790, in London, England, and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was ordained a deacon in 1815 and a priest in 1816, and served as a curate in various parishes before being appointed as the Vicar of St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, in 1822. Sumner's career in the Church of England continued to advance, and he was consecrated as Bishop of Winchester on May 11, 1841. During his tenure as Bishop, he worked tirelessly to improve the living conditions of the poor and to promote education in his diocese. Sumner was also a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery and spoke out against the practice both in England and in the United States. This photograph of Sumner, taken during his later years, captures the wisdom and dignity of a man who dedicated his life to serving his community and upholding the values of the Church.
