EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles Richard Sumner (1790-1874), an English churchman and Bishop of Winchester, is depicted in this striking portrait photograph. Sumner was born on October 13, 1790, in London, England, and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was ordained a deacon in 1815 and a priest in 1816, and served as a curate in various parishes before being appointed as the Vicar of St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, in 1822. Sumner's career in the Church of England continued to advance, and he was consecrated as Bishop of Winchester on May 11, 1841. During his tenure as Bishop, he worked tirelessly to improve the living conditions of the poor and to promote education in his diocese. Sumner was also a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery and spoke out against the practice both in England and in the United States. This photograph of Sumner, taken during his later years, captures the wisdom and dignity of a man who dedicated his life to serving his community and upholding the values of the Church. Sumner's commitment to social justice and his unwavering faith made him a respected and influential figure in English religious and social circles during the 19th century. Despite the passage of time, this photograph serves as a powerful reminder of Sumner's legacy and the impact he had on the lives of countless people. The intricate details of Sumner's vestments and the solemn expression on his face convey a sense of reverence and devotion, making this a truly captivating and historically significant image.
