EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the introspective and intellectual gaze of Karl Marx (1818-1883), a German philosopher, economist, and revolutionary whose ideas have profoundly influenced modern political and social thought. Born in Trier, Prussia, Marx studied law and philosophy at the University of Bonn and the University of Berlin. Disillusioned by the political climate of his time, he turned to journalism and political activism, becoming a leading figure in the Communist League. Marx is best known for his collaborative works with Friedrich Engels, most notably "The Communist Manifesto" (1848), which outlined the principles of communism and called for the working class to overthrow the capitalist system. Marx's magnum opus, "Das Kapital" (Capital), was published in three volumes between 1867 and 1883, and remains a foundational text in the study of political economy. Despite his revolutionary ideas, Marx spent most of his life in poverty and exile, living in various European cities including London, Paris, and Brussels. He died in London on March 14, 1883, at the age of 64. This portrait, an engraving from a historical archive, offers a glimpse into the face of a man whose ideas continue to shape the political and social landscape of the modern world. Marx's legacy extends far beyond his native Germany, influencing movements for workers' rights, social justice, and revolutionary change in Asia and beyond. His enduring influence on history makes this image a valuable addition to any collection of historical prints.
