EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Mrs. Alice Pleasance Hargreaves (nee Liddell), the inspiration behind Lewis Carroll's beloved character Alice in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Born on November 18, 1852, Alice Liddell grew up in the charming English countryside, where her encounters with Carroll, her childhood friend and mentor, would forever be etched into literary history. The photograph, taken in 1934, reveals a mature Alice with a regal air, her piercing gaze and elegant posture exuding a sense of wisdom and refinement. Her youthful spirit, however, is not entirely lost, as the hint of a mischievous smile plays at the corners of her lips, a reminder of the whimsical adventures she once embarked upon in Wonderland. Carroll, a gifted mathematician and photographer, first met Alice and her sisters when they were young girls, and the imaginative tales he crafted for them would eventually evolve into his literary masterpiece. The connection between the real Alice and the fictional character she inspired is a fascinating blend of fact and fiction, history and fantasy, and this photograph offers a tantalizing glimpse into the life of the woman who inspired one of the most beloved and enduring characters in literature. As we gaze upon this image of Mrs. Hargreaves, we are transported back in time, to a world where the boundaries between reality and imagination were blurred, and where the wondrous adventures of Alice in Wonderland were born.
